As a real estate brokerage in Central Illinois, we've seen an uptick in sophisticated rental scams targeting local residents, and we want to ensure you stay protected. The most common read flag is a listing that seems "too good to be true", such as a high-end property in a desirable neighborhood offered at a significantly lower rent than similar units nearby. Scammers often create a sense of exterme urgency, pressuring you to pay a security deposit or application fee before you've even seen the property. They may claim to be out of the country or unavailable for an in-person showing, instead asking you to wire money or use untraceable methods like gift cards, cryptocurrency, or peer-to-peer apps like Zelle.
To protect yourself, follow these best practices:
- Insist on an in-person tour: Never sign a lease or send money without touring the interior of the property first.
- Verify the Listing: Cross-reference the address on multiple platforms; if the same home is listed for sale by a different agent or has different contact info elsewhere, it's likely a scam.
- Check the Source: Research the landlord or property management company and ensure you are communicating through their official website or verified business email.
- Avoid Wire Transfers: Use secure, traceable payment methods like personal checks or official online portals provided by established brokerages.
